While searching online for recommendations of Japanese lesbian novels today, I stumbled upon a peculiar real estate account. The account introduces properties in the tone of a woman imagining a shared life with her girlfriend.

One photo shows the kitchen:

We both like nails, bu I use my natural nails, while she wears gel nails. I watched her shiny nails—they didn’t move a bit, even when she was washing rice..”
ree
“She insisted on an open-plan kitchen so we could chat while she cooks.”
ree
“She laughed and said that watching me cook calms her down. I asked if that meant I reminded her of her mother—she said, ‘Maybe.’”

A sliding door is featured:

“There’s a door, but she doesn’t like me closing it. She wants to feel me moving around the room.”

A photo of the rooftop clothesline:

“Honestly, I enjoy hanging up laundry with you—even when we complain about each other’s messiness.”

A tatami room with a low table is captioned:

ree

“She’s sitting by the table, turning to say, ‘You’re home?’—still wearing a sheet mask on her face.”

A tiny balcony that fits only one person:

ree

“Even though we live together, I still long for a little space of my own. Does that make me selfish?”

Until this point, you can’t be entirely sure the narrator is a woman—until a photo of a bookshelf appears:

ree

“She reads before bed. I don’t. It’s funny—though we’re both human, both women, we approach life so differently.”

You can’t help but wonder—did this real estate agent first enter the housing business to find a home for herself and her girlfriend?

Or is this girlfriend merely a beautiful invention?

About Me

I’m a rummager of second-hand lesbian stories — whispers, gossip, marginalia.

I collect the soft traces and loud silences left by women who loved women, whether or not they ever said so aloud.

—from Japanese rental websites where dreamers describe their future with a lover in lesbian tones,

to ancient Chinese divination slips from the Qin dynasty, hinting that the direction of a doorway may determine whether your wife and your sister will fall for each other.

This site is my notebook, my archive, my way of asking what’s been hidden, and why.
Welcome to my diary for strangers.
